Shelley, Mark, Marlowe and Becket welcomed “Dixie” into their hearts and lives this past Sunday. As soon as Dixie stepped out of our van and saw her new family across the street, her tail began to wag happily… she knew she was home. :-)
Below are the pictures my husband Geoff took of their first meeting!

Dixie is delightful girl and has the gorgeous black eyeliner that has made “Dutch Bahama” descendents so famous!

Shelley and Mark are so impressed with how calm and well adjusted Dixie is. Her first night, she even graced them with their first “greyhound roach”!

Tony loves the water!

Tanya just sent another wonderful picture of Tony. Apparently he LOVES being in the water… he even sticks his head under and blows bubbles!

Would you look at these awesome pictures of the adorable “Tony”, adopted by Tanya, during our most recent mini haul on June 26th! (The trip is described below in the post entitled “Mini Haul a Success!). Tony just looks like he is in 7th heaven. Tanya, thank you so much for providing this special boy with such a happy home! :-)
These photos are incredible and I especially love the one of Tony trying to fit into the makeshift cat bed that Tanya’s parents have supplied the feral cats they do their best to take care of.

A little background on “That Boy” (as new mom Pat calls him).
Samson was one of our first adoptions, but he was returned to us within a couple of days, when things didn’t work out with the other dog in the family. Geoff and I arranged to pick him up and then do Pat’s home visit in Abbotsford on the way back. Pat liked the big galoot right away, but she was actually looking for an older male for her 9 year old female greyhound, Zumi. Zumi had been quite despondent since the passing of her long time greyhound mate, Mason. :-(
We leashed and muzzled Samson up and took him into the yard. No sooner had they been introduced, that Zumi’s ears pricked up and she started racing around and around and around him! Doing, what else???? ZOOMIES!!!!
Samson had found his forever home! :-)
Pat’s pretty white picket fence was not high enough to hold Samson in, so to the tune of $1000, she installed a chain link fence right along side it. Samson was in heaven, snoozing and sunning beside Zumi and his mom in the yard.
Too good to be true???
A couple of days later, a loose cat sauntered by and “That Boy” was off and running at full speed… climbing awkwardly, but successfully, over both fences!
Although his antics were immediately foiled, that was the moment he came to be known as “Samson The Swift”.
Returning “That Boy” was not an option to Pat and although she jogged with him daily, when she was at home, she wanted him to have the freedom of an open kitchen door and a secure yard to wander out to. And so, with Pat’s permission, we continue with the saga of “Samson The Swift, one expensive puppy”!

————————————————————-
Part 1:

Hi Annie,
Okay, another 900 dollars later, we are now about 70% secure. I have made him a kennel at the back of the house which runs about 8-10 ft wide
and about 50 ft long. It has cement, grass and dirt with a 6 foot wooden fence at one end and added to the chain link at the other end which is about seven feet high, so he is safe. It has the 9 ft hedge runnng the length of it. Have also added webbing to the chain link, another 300 dollars, so he is not intense with his vision and is calmer wnen he is in the other part of the yard. Have added 8 ft high reed barrier, 16 ft long at the back of the compost pile, so he cannot see the cat in the next yard.
The final plan will be to add hedging along the chain link fence along the driveway, but that will be another 1000 dollars, so it won’t happen for at least another 6-12 months. In the meantime, my girlfriend and I are going to add another 2-3 feet to the exisiting chain link fence. She found me a black plastic chain link that matches fairly well. According to the city bylaw, the hedging can be grown to any height, as there is no height restriction as there is for fences, so that will be my ultimate solution.
He is a sweetie, Loves his new mom. Eating really well. Zumi is much happier and lively with his presence
take care, will keep you updated.

Pat

Part 2:

Dear Annie,
The $3500.00 dog now has his hedge put in, so he has the run of the side yard, which he loves.
His favorite frog toy disappeared for 2 weeks, where was it you ask? Buried in the yard, I know this for sure because when I found it, I saw him re-bury it, very delicately of course.
His new favorite toy is the jolly ball- loves chasing it and carrying it around- hard to bury this.
New habits he is learning that are not looked favorably upon- are #1- countersurfing++ . His attempts have netted him chicken, Tim Horton’s sandwich, chinese fortune cookie, cheese bun, all which were rescued out of his mouth in mid attempt to call them his own.
Gate is now placed across the kitchen garbage area, as he has now learned to open the garbage can- it
has a spring loaded lock on it-Poor Samson- thwarted at every turn.
He just makes me laugh every time I look at him as he has such a joyful outlook on life.
Hopefully there will be no other expenses, as I think he has covered all the bases of frowned upon behavior.

Pat

Part 3:

Hi Annie:

Yes, I do love that boy. He makes me laugh, even watching him sleep is an adventure- his lips fall back, his teeth show and he snores!

Pat
—————————————-

Pat recently sent me these pictures of “That Boy” on his couch. The quality isn’t great because they were scanned from the original photographs, but that doesn’t detract, one bit, from the sheer joy these 2 hounds are experiencing. :-)

Thanks for sharing this wonderful love story with me.

Mini Haul a Success!

Geoff and I did the beautiful drive to Golden on June 25th. We brought our sweet foster Silver Lee with us so that she could meet her prospective new parents in Alberta. Leah arrived from Calgary shortly after we had checked in, with youngsters Dancer, Tony, Rose and Spy. They were a HOOT!!! Tony had only been fostered a short while and the others had never been in a home before, let alone a hotel room! They were so excited!
Dancer immediately jumped on the bed and wouldn’t take no for an answer. HA! The challenge was on! Neither one of us had much stamina from our respective trips, but I did win out in the end and she settled on a cushy dog bed.;-) Below are some pictures from our short night in Golden.

At 4AM the next morning (3AM our time), the sun was up and so were the pups! After feeding, watering, walking and loading up we were off to an early start. On the way home, we stopped in Salmon Arm so that Tanya could fall in love and adopt, her first greyhound, Tony! :-)

Don’t forget, the beautiful little girl Dancer is available for adoption and is being fostered locally! :-)

Hi friends,
At the crack of dawn tomorrow, Geoff and I and Silver Lee will head out for Golden. We will certainly miss our foster girl… we absolutely adore her. But, there is a couple who have been admiring her for a long time in Alberta and no available hound there has touched their hearts like she has. Once they meet her they will understand why… she is such a love with her people! She also “roaches” with complete abandon, as indicated in her picture below!!!

At around 5PM, Leah will meet us at our hotel with the 4 new BC dogs… 3 of which already have homes and very excited new owners awaiting them! We will all spend the night in a Golden hotel room (did I mention that 3 of these hounds are not yet home acclimated! ;-) ) and head out early Saturday morning.
On the way back, we hope to meet up briefly with Jennie (a fellow Chinook Winds adopter and home visit volunteer) and her hound Cindy, in Blind Bay for a doggie photo shoot! :-) The next stop will be Tanya’s home in Salmon Arm. She is adopting her first greyhound… the very handsome, brindle youngster, Tony! Sorry no picture yet, we’ll have to wait a few days.
Then it will be non stop back to Port Moody, where new owners Marilyn and John will be waiting excitedly for their first greyhounds… Spy (the elegant black boy) and Rose (the brindle beauty).

…. and Shannon and Justin will be greeting their new foster… Dancer!

Dancer will be available for adoption through Chinook Winds Greyhound Rescue. She is reputed to be a ray of sunshine and loved by all who meet her. She is not cat friendly but loves everyone else! For information on adopting Dancer or any other greyhound available through Chinook Winds, please call Annie at 778-355-9090. Thank you!

Charley’s Diary Part 2

Charlie’s Diary 22nd. June 2010.

Well… what a week I have had…. I will begin with my name.
To my surprise, I found out that Charlie means “my love” and is a good boy’s name.
Odie (The BOSS) and I were playing tag in the garden. My human was sipping her coffee as she checked out her raspberry patch. She bent down to pull out a weed . I thought I could be of help and at half speed ran over and gave her a hefty nudge on her bottom. I was wearing my muzzle. She went flying into the raspberries. Coffee all over the place and that was when I found out about my other name when she bellowed …”CHARLES!!!”.
I had never heard that before. Then came another shock, she struggled to her feet and said it again “CHARLES!!!” but this time it was accompanied by THE LOOK!  I ran to stand behind Odie, but as he is only little, he didn’t do a good job of hiding me!  I am happy to say it did not last long, because my human laughed. :-)
The next day, I had forgotten it ever happened. New friends arrived to meet me and they brought a gift, a stuffie!  I was wearing all the necessary equipment… my leash and muzzle. My other human was holding the leash lightly and I swear I wouldn’t have done it if Jackson THE CAT had not raced across the grass!!! We were off and running!!! The leash was dropped, wine was spilled, Odie was barking like a wild thing and then it came…. “CHARLES!”… I am sure there was THE LOOK as well, but I was going too fast to see it!!! Jackson THE CAT shot through the hedge as mad as….. well, I am not going to spoil my diary by using naughty words, although there were a few choice ones flying round the garden.  ;-) I am happy to report, I was not the only one in trouble. My other human, the one who dropped the leash, got “JOHN!” and THE LOOK and wee Odie was told to shut up. The guests were in fits of laughter and I must admit, I was rather proud of my part in the entertainment.
Lots of other things have happened, too.  The highlight was the upstairs hall. Last year, beautiful hard wood was laid and the hall looked great. Then I came along. I slid, crashed, somersaulted and nearly killed myself every time I went to bed in my human’s room. :-( My stuffies suffered too. After much discussion, we now have a hall with 36ft. of beautiful soft runner that I can trot up and down on like the elegant fellow I am!
As I said, it was an interesting week.
OH! THE CAT cat came back and boxed my ears !!! ;-)
Charlie.

Charlie’s Diary

Hi fellow greyhound friends. As I’ve injured my foot and haven’t been able to walk the Port Moody trails for a couple of months, I got permission to share some delightful stories with you. The first is written by Charlie (formerly Chainsaw) from his new home in Lantzville, BC. :-)   Annie

Charlie’s Diary June 11th. 2010.
This morning I helped myself to toast from the toast rack at breakfast. Then went for a long walk with Odie to visit my new friend a golden retriever called “Padstowe”. He is very friendly chap who let me play with one of his stuffies..   We had coffee and ginger cookies. I just loved the ginger cookies so we got the recipe and now I can have them at home.
This afternoon was great. I ran a couple of laps of my track. Stole my human’s “Swiffer” and dusted the grass and Odie. After that I was exhausted as you can see from the photographs.
I am looking forward to tomorrow.
Charlie.
Below is Charlie in his new home with best friend and leader of the pack, Odie. ;-)
